Reject du jour: how hard is it to keep ahead of the news?
This cartoon was inspired by the very desperate search to keep ahead enough of the news to submit cartoons that might still be valid for at least a few days. At least time enough for the magazine to come out! It aint’ easy!
Things change so quickly! For example, McCain will pull the Decency Card a few days before the debates, mystifying everyone till the day of the debate when he says, “I repudiate people when they get out of line!” (Which is true, but only for that one time that he made sure he got on TV a few days before the debates, saying “Obama is a decent family man”!) Till the debate, I thought he had simply lost his marbles again, like that time he hugged President Bush, with a beatific smile. Here is my take, the day of that repudiation, which did not anticipate its use as fodder for the debate:
I was so innocent and naive! His true love, after all, is Joe the Plumber, a guy ” who thinks Barack Obama “can tap dance – almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”! Now that’s a supporter McCain can be proud of….?

This is just totally bizarre.
Why should a plumber’s assistant claim to be making $250,000 to $280,000 a year?!

Right? Well, it turns out he’s defaulted on his taxes and has a lean on his bank account. He doesn’t even have the RIGHT to ask for a loan to try and buy his business. That’s one thing. The other thing is, even if he were totally paid up and had saved up enough money to get a loan to buy his business, he’d probably never make as much money as would bring him into a higher tax bracket, as all small businesses operate at a loss for years. And then, we do have a recession going on here—NOBODY is expecting to make more than they did. A plumber’s assistant who dreams he’ll be making so much money even though he’s already in debt, incapable of managing his taxes, and seemingly unaware there’s a recession going on—- that’s the American Dream? Dream on, Joe the Plumber!

Well, at least here in Germany, a plumber’s assistant, who has not gone through any apprenticeship whatsoever would not be able to set up his own business. At least not as a plumber. But this would be due to his own lack of formal qualification.
