Modern times!

We’ve finally made it into the 21st century!  Obama is the first bi-racial president of the United States.  I am emphasizing that he is half white and half black, and this is why: I am half hispanic, and half white, with a little Jewish thrown in.  What does that make me?  That makes me American. And that’s how I related to Obama.  I related to him as an American. Even though he was forced into choosing black over white for political purposes, he is multi-racial, and that is the future of not only the USA, but also of the world.  Which is good, because it means love is prevailing!

Welcome to the 21st century! The future is finally beginning to look like the future, and not the past!

Now! Where’s my Jetsons space-car?  :)

[...] Modern times! - Newyorkette has become one of my favourite blogs. I suspect a lot of people with complex biographies of race and migration will, on some level, connect with Obama. What triumphs in his election is the idea that you can have that kind of “mixed background” and be fully American. Do I really have to list all the other western democracies where you would struggle to be accepted with such a background and never stand a chance of rising to the highest office? [...]

    Congratulations on your new president!

Thank you! I’m very proud of him! And my fellow voters! You never saw so many people vote in this country! It was amazing.

I just hope that he can live up to the high expectations that everybody built upon him. It’s a bit scary actually, some people seem to take him for the new messiah.

And of course he’s not going to be able to solve each and every problem there is. And certainly not within a very short time span.

So there is going to be some disappointment. Inevitably.

I’m really curious on what the future will bring. It certainly is a brighter future than in the years before. And it also is a brighter future than with all other options. And for the rest - we will see…

Oh, I think all that messianic talk is just nonsense. People aren’t idiots. Well, maybe some are, but not the majority. It’s only that the fact he got elected not just in spite of being black, but also because so many people actually WANTED him (unlike when Gore got elected and then dumped by the Supreme Court), that makes people feel like anything is possible.

Things will be hard here! Everywhere! I told a McCain supporter yesterday that I would be “spreading my wealth” to him, so why would he complain? And he said, typically, “Not to me, maybe to all the people on welfare!” And I said, hey, buddy, the way things are going, you may well be on welfare soon. So don’t disdain my money or welfare recipients so quickly.”

For that matter, it could happen to any of us, if the fashion industry keeps shoring up its spending. A whole line of clothes I did fittings for all season just got cancelled. Luckily they had to pay fitting by fitting and my pay doesn’t depend on whether the line sells or not. Only my future fittings depend on the success of a line.

But that’s a whole line of clothing that won’t be sold, and won’t have a profit, and voila! Less money for that company, and probably less employees next year, if the company even exists next year. That designer is probably better off taking commissions from bigger companies now, like H&M, or Anthropology, or Kmart, so she has no more overhead, just intake.

That’s what I’d be going for, if it were me! I’m working like crazy, not turning anything down no matter how low the pay, because all those little jobs may be all I have later, you just never know. And they add up!
