Roy G. Biv day!

Posted in CAJ at the huffington post, newyorkette times, oscarina, politics, gossip, other nonsense, postcard from new york on Friday, Jun. 24, 2011

I’ll always think of this as Roy G. Biv day, you know why? Of course you do, if you ever had to memorize the colors of the rainbow in the right order: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet—ROYGBIV, or, Roy G. Biv, as we art students say to ourselves when we try to remember. Nice guy, Roy.

Congratulations to New York, where we can all be gay in every sense of the word now, as equally as anyone. Boo to you Ruben Diaz, but as this is a democracy, we have to uphold your right to dissent from common sense if you must. Do everything else right, and I’ll be okay with you. But you better do everything else right, bud.

I’ll have to repost this Oscarina (as seen on the Huffington Post recently) in honor of it all. Blow it out your asses, conservatives! (click on the image if you need it bigger).

Postcard from New York: super-ephemeral snow

Posted in postcard from new york on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010

It was gone by midday. It must have had a sell by date like the fresh organic chicken I ordered from Fresh Direct. The one that said sell by [the day I received it].

Rough sketches with my new brush pen:

Above, the George Washington Bridge as seen from one bank of the Hudson River (the bank that’s popular with geese).

Postcard from New York: yummmm

I saw this on the back of an ice cream truck on Spring Street. Hypnotic, isn’t it?

Postcard from Brighton Beach

Posted in postcard from new york on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008

I snapped this on my way to the subway at the end of the day, after having a “Catch of the day” sandwich. See those circles of light behind Nathan’s that look a bit like the pretty spaceships from Close Encounters of the Third Kind? That’s Keyspan Park, where my little brother was watching the Cyclones game!

CAJ subway series: last upstate visit of the summer

Posted in postcard from new york, rejected cartoons on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008

And it rained! So, all I have is this upstate roadkill-inspired cartoon, and the only two drawings I did indoors while it rained cats & dogs.

I needed something to draw, so I drew Crawford as a redneck while he was drawing:

Then, disappointed that I had not drawn anything much during my visit, I drew these Queen Anne’s Lace blossoms during my last five minutes on the property, to make hay while it rained:

I almost forgot! I did snap this pic of the thunderstorm chasing (and overtaking) my train back downstate:

Postcard from New York: you give and you give…

Seen in the Wall Street nabe. I thought this was the perfect passive-aggressive gift shop sighting.

Postcard from 7th avenue: ingenuity welcome

Posted in postcard from new york on Wednesday, Jul. 30, 2008

Seen on seventh avenue, in the garment district, on the side of a van. Yes. Ingenuity is always welcome here at Johnson Controls. Does Johnson Control? Yes, Johnson Controls! Does Johnson Controls have control issues? Who’s asking? Why are you asking? Why do you need to know? Johnson Controls controls the controls. Does that answer your question? Because that’s all you need to know.

I love looking out the window late at night and seeing that plenty of other people are still up, too.

CAJ subway series: upstate for the 4th

Posted in etc., postcard from new york on Monday, Jul. 7, 2008

This is all I have to show for my 4th of July weekend! It’s marker on newsprint (my muji book again), so there’s a bit of show-through happening. Click on the images for larger versions!

The path up the hill:

The little island in the muskrat pond (sorry no muskrats—they’ve been very discreet lately):

A less detailed study of above:

Five bucks if you can guess what this is (would really benefit from some color or shading! It’s actually the babbling brook seen from above, with bushes on the left, and rocks on either side of the rushing water as it goes into the pond in the above part of the drawing.):

Moire is some kind of something-poo type mix:

And Gypsy is another hybrid like a lassapoo or something like that:

Here’s a little montage of Gypsy and Moire I did with Photoshop and two sketches.

More Moire and Gypsy:

Yet more:

There were thousands of minnows in the muskrat pond:

My weed cartoon:

The dock on the other pond:

Crawford inspecting the pond:

More minnows:

The swimming was great:

Sam the black lab has only one thing on his mind:

CAJ subway series: Rhinebeck

Posted in postcard from new york on Monday, Jun. 23, 2008

More sketches in my Muji book with permanent marker. This time I took the subway to Penn Station, then the train to Rhinebeck, where I drew these before having enough coffee to perhaps do better! The idea was to do a study of the trees, which have always been a pain in the neck for me to draw (so many leaves, so distracting!).

Above, on the left, a chipmunk made an appearance on the bannister mid-drawing.
Below, a pond jumping with fish except when I fished in it.

CAJ subway series: june 20th, 2008

Posted in postcard from new york on Friday, Jun. 20, 2008

I got a blank “magazine” with newsprint pages from the Muji store on 39th and 8th avenue (I am trying to stay away from that place!), and decided to use it with the permanent marker I bought there also to draw people while out and about.

So here are my first two subjects. First, a lady on the subway (shakey subway ride, so sorry about the jittery line), above. Then, below, a big guy in Bryant Park.

Both had the simple luck (or misfortune) to be sitting directly in front of me, oblivious to my presence. Not meant to be masterpieces, just very quick, surreptitious sketches meant to keep me drawing now that my day job has become rather overwhelming lately!

(Oh, and the dates are wrong, should be June 20th, not June 19th. I just hardly ever know what day it is.)
