Reject du jour: Valentine rapture

Posted in rejected cartoons on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009

This may seem like an unfortunate accident, but would you really want to put your love life in the hands of a baby (presumably incontinent, and yet no diaper!) with wings and armed with a bow and arrow? It may be for the best!

Speaking of rejection (and the cartoon above was rejected three years in a row in various versions and updates), if you have no valentine today, or have been recently dumped and need to get out and laugh your ass off, go see The Rejection Show’s REJECTED VALENTINE’S DAY HEARTBREAK HAVEN at the UCB! Free beer and a party after the show! Couples and singles both welcome.

UPDATE: this cartoon appears on the Huffington Posts’s comedy site, 23/6 as of now, here! Please feel free to sign in to them and make comments! (It makes them think I’m popular!)

(Reject du jour): Happy Friday the 13th!

In preparation for Valentine’s, here is one way cupid can mess with you. And you know cupid loves to mess with you.

Reject du jour: champagne delivery images

Posted in CAJ in TNY, TNY, in the wringer, rejected cartoons on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008

When I sell a cartoon, or see one published, I like to put up my rejects for good measure! So, first, here’s a link to my latest cartoons to appear in The New Yorker, this week a Halloween-themed one, and earlier, a childhood/artist-themed one. If that’s not enough, here’s a IQ-test game called “I don’t get it” from the Cartoon Issue, in which one of my old cartoons makes an appearance!

Now to the rejects!

I tried to come up with some images for The Bubble Lounge, one of my illustration clients, because I didn’t like the photo they asked me to use for a champagne delivery promo I was working on for them, but both my ideas were rejected!

Oh well! Here they are:

This one was inspired by a Japanese delivery truck logo I once saw in Tokyo.

And this one just popped into my head, inspired by a Le Monde graphic  for newspaper delivery used in their subscription ads:

Reject du jour: how hard is it to keep ahead of the news?

Posted in TNY, politics, gossip, other nonsense, rejected cartoons on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008

This cartoon was inspired by the very desperate search to keep ahead enough of the news to submit cartoons that might still be valid for at least a few days.  At least time enough for the magazine to come out! It aint’ easy!

Things change so quickly! For example, McCain will pull the Decency Card a few days before the debates, mystifying everyone till the day of the debate when he says, “I repudiate people when they get out of line!” (Which is true, but only for that one time that he made sure he got on TV a few days before the debates, saying “Obama is a decent family man”!) Till the debate, I thought he had simply lost his marbles again, like that time he hugged President Bush, with a beatific smile. Here is my take, the day of that repudiation, which did not anticipate its use as fodder for the debate:

I was so innocent and naive! His true love, after all, is Joe the Plumber, a guy ” who thinks Barack Obama “can tap dance – almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”! Now that’s a supporter McCain can be proud of….?

Reject du jour: one more drawing of Paul Newman

Posted in rejected cartoons on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008

To be fair, nobody actually asked me for this (or the other, previous) Paul Newman drawing! I drew it the day I read of his demise, and then thought, why not see if TNY needs a drawing. They didn’t, so, that’s why this one is “rejected.” It was well-received, though—and I must add that Max has been monitoring my progress in portraits and Photoshop very patiently!

Reject du jour: but maybe they’ve changed their tune

(maybe they’re hoping something will “happen” to Sarah by now!)

Reject du jour: this goes out to McCain feminists

Posted in in the wringer, politics, gossip, other nonsense, rejected cartoons on Wednesday, Sep. 17, 2008

This was rejected, but  not abandoned! I decided to practice my colorizing with Photoshop.  Still have no idea if I’m doing it right, just trying this or that.  Seems like it should be easier, somehow!

And I don’t want to hear any crap about comparing Palin to a poodle being sexist!  She’s the one who started comparing herself to domestic animals! She made her dog-bed and she can lie in it now!

It’s been a busy week, and this is all I have to say about it! At least, for now.

Reject du jour: how the Olympics can ruin your life

Posted in TNY, rejected cartoons on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008

I have frankly been having trouble concentrating because of them. I mean, you put the TV on with the Olympics in the background, and then someone starts running and leaping and twisting and throwing themselves around a mat in a monstrously inhuman way, and you’re totally transfixed! You say, I’ll just watch this one. Next thing you know, it’s one o’clock in the morning and you’ve gotten nothing done.

CAJ subway series: last upstate visit of the summer

Posted in postcard from new york, rejected cartoons on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008

And it rained! So, all I have is this upstate roadkill-inspired cartoon, and the only two drawings I did indoors while it rained cats & dogs.

I needed something to draw, so I drew Crawford as a redneck while he was drawing:

Then, disappointed that I had not drawn anything much during my visit, I drew these Queen Anne’s Lace blossoms during my last five minutes on the property, to make hay while it rained:

I almost forgot! I did snap this pic of the thunderstorm chasing (and overtaking) my train back downstate:

Reject du jour: a little off the top and bottom and sides

Posted in rejected cartoons on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008

I thought of this rejected cartoon when I read this article, but it took me ages to dig it up! It was at the bottom of the bottom of a pile on the bottom of another pile.

Reject du jour: where’s the grit?

Posted in rejected cartoons on Monday, Jul. 28, 2008

It’s getting scarcer and scarcer, with all the kids moving into West Harlem and their parents paying their rent. I’ll say this much, though: when they complain about no running water, their $3500 rent makes them sound louder to the landlords! So I guess they’re good for something!

Reject du jour: ornithology

(Watercolor and india ink, 11” x 15”, by Carolita Johnson)

I’ve always wanted to be like J. J. Audubon and do my own Birds of America (or some other locality) type work. But I turned out to be a cartoonist instead. This is what you get when you bark up the wrong tree! Doubly wrong, as it was rejected by the magazine (in two different departments, no less)! But I remain undaunted. That is what you must be in this business. There’s no place in this business for daunted cartoonists.

And guess what? I’m very proud to say that this cartoon, duly rejected by TNY, was duly picked up by Gothamist today! I’m duly flattered! Thanks, Gothamist!

Reject du jour: mmmm!

Posted in rejected cartoons on Friday, Jul. 18, 2008

I always honor a sale with a rejected cartoon from the same batch. This cartoon (and five others!) was rejected in favor of another this week. I really only submitted it for fun, which is what one must do to remain undaunted (word of the week)! It’s also the only way to get a ridiculous, unpublishable cartoon out of one’s head!

Reject du jour: over the moon

Posted in TNY, rejected cartoons on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008

There’s nothing like selling a clichéed cartoon image with a fresh, unheard-of caption! That’s a cartoonist’s favorite pastime!
This attempt was rejected this week. (Another cartoon was bought, so I don’t feel too bad.) Perhaps my caption was not as unheard of as I’d hoped! (sigh!) It will be resubmitted with another caption someday, have no doubt. I’m very proud of my cows! Ive never drawn cows before!

Reject du jour: hey, big spender!

Posted in TNY, rejected cartoons on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008

Too bad I can’t use that $300 President Bush is trying to tuck into my bra to go buy something useful, like some brains for him! I will definitely be giving it to charity, even if it means eating rice and beans for a month. I cook a pretty mean rice n’ beans, anyway. Mmmm! I can’t wait!

Reject du jour: the dregs of Christmas

Posted in TNY, rejected cartoons on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008

Just like Mick Stevens, I’ve got my rejected Christmas cartoon dregs. This one is about the dregs of Christmas, actually. I was hoping to see it published sometime in February, in honor of all those who hang onto their Christmas trees for much too long.

I have another one which I’m going to try and preserve in aspic till next year.

Note: be careful how you get rid of your Christmas tree! Don’t do like this guy: Man throws self out window along with Christmas tree
